Brock's first VL models were based on the Calais,
an obvious indication that the vehicles were
now very much in the up-market muscle car sector.
Both sedan and wagon versions were available,
and the initial Calais LE
model was powered by the 3.0 litre Nissan straight
six, but as the Nissan Turbo and V8 engines became
available it was only natural they would find
their way under the HDT bonnets.
For a time the
turbo six was more popular than the V8, the latter
had been set up to provide bag-loads of torque,
but many simply wanted the power and had seemingly
forgotten how tractable the V8's were. Improvements
were made to the V8's and soon they would regain
the mantle as the "motor" of choice, although
Peter Brock continued to refer to them as 4.9
litre long after Holden had switched to calling
them simply a 5.0 litre.
