Identifying a Torana, particularly a highly sought after XU-1 or
L34 SL/R can be a difficult task. That said, as for those chasing down an
A9X, that job is made a whole lot easier by the tell-tale use of the
UC Torana floorpan (enabling the Salisbury diff and rear disc brake setup to be fitted).
Correct identification can be extremely difficult, and few (including the Team @
Unique Cars and Parts) can offer little more than what is detailed below. The engine and body serial numbers do not identify exactly what it is you are looking at, and the VIN will not identify list options, such as the L34.
Another problem with correct identification is that many examples will have undergone owner modification over the years. Few SL/R's kept their steel wheels fitted for long, it being very popular at the time to switch to mag wheels.
Torana LC XU-1:
Many copy XU-1's have incorrectly retained the GTR emblem on the door trim. The difficulty however is that the door trim alone does not disqualify the car as an XU-1, as this may have been changed at a later time. The only thing for sure is that the trim is not original, and this would warrant further investigation into the authenticity of the vehicle.
Torana LJ XU-1:
Look for an engine number with the prefix "JP" on the block. Of course there is no guarantee that the block has been swapped, so be careful.
Torana L34 SL/R 5000:
The most copied, and spotting one can be difficult. Check the stud pattern to ensure it matches the HQ/HJ/HX/HZ 14 inch stud pattern - stock SL/R's had a 13 inch wheel fitted. Also look for
exhaust headers and roller rockers, although again these could be fitted after-market, as too the body kit.
Torana A9X:
Check under the rear to ensure it has a Salisbury axle and disc brakes.
