Introduction
First introduced at the Frankfurt Auto Show in
1973,
the 230/4 replaced the 220 sedan which had been in manufacture
since 1967.
The all new 4 cylinder engine developed 110hp
and gave the sedan a top speed of 170 kmh.
The new body had a wider
radiator grille and was slightly
lower in the front - similar to those of the current S
class models.
The vehicle shared the same
suspension and
other, (modern for the time) advanced safety features.
Overall a good, dependable and economical car, the four
cylinder motor did not have the performance of the larger
6 and V8 powered cars.
