Back in the day my mate who managed a Repco branch had a TF Ghia as his ‘company car’. It was that mid-blue metallic with slightly darker vinyl roof and very highly specced with auto, air, power steer, sunroof, tape player. I drove it quite a few times and with the alloy-head ‘cross flow’ 4.1 litre Six it was smooth and torquey, punchy even from idle, and pleasingly effective transport. Handling and ride were more than acceptable at sane speeds and overall it felt tighter, more solid (especially mechanically) and of higher quality and better built than the equivalent Commodores of the era. Although they sold less of them, to be honest I still consider it a superior car for everyday use and ownership than those early Commodores - a much underrated car.

The 250 motor was ok, but my brother gave me one of these with the 4 cylinder 2 litre under the bonnet. Man was it a piece of *** ! Oil spewed out of it everywhere, the gear stick snapped off, the windscreen wipers shat themselves, and the starter motor fell out of it. My first 2 years of driving were hell because of this turd.

I considered a couple of cortinas in 1985, a TE GL, yellow 3 speed 3.3 200 6, & also a TF, fitted with a 250 motor,red x pack, auto,tinted windows p,steer & a.c.,…but I ended up getting an XE s pak, yellow, 4.1 auto, p.s ,a.c., very nice car it was!…these days, a Toyota corolla is in the driveway, but the old fords had much more character
