As opposed to the traditional route of designing another CDI system, Australian company IC&E has chosen to use digital technology to create a range of hybrid products, offering the higher intensity of CDI systems and the longer duration of O.E variable dwell systems. These two factors combine to produce the greatest possible total spark energy (#) at virtually all RPM's from the IC&E system.Improved output is achieved through using a higher coil primary current, resulting in the secondary spark current being more intense. The system also uses mosfet switching technology which is faster as well as minimising heat dissipation and energy wastage, to produce the longest duration spark available.
Further, by employing microprocessor technology, the IC&E system is able to offer many features previously not available with variable dwell type systems. At cranking speeds, the IC&E system multi sparks, providing four closely spaced bursts of spark energy , giving maximum power for starting. This is different to the multiple sparks from CDI units which occur further apart. The current drain at cranking speeds is also very low, in contrast to other so called variable dwell systems. There is virtually no minimum cranking speed to obtain a good spark.
